Some definitions of terms which appear frequently in this blog, which will be added to over the months.

The “PTE Areas”

These represent the six English Passenger Transport Authority areas, covering the major English conurbations. The authorities were originally established in 1969 under the provisions of the 1968 Transport Act, though their current boundaries were set in 1974 to accord with the Metropolitan County Councils established under the 1972 Local Government Act. The metropolitan counties themselves were abolished in 1987, but the PTAs remained in existence.

The six areas are:

  • Greater Manchester
  • Merseyside (Merseytravel)
  • South Yorkshire
  • Tyne & Wear (Nexus)
  • West Midlands (Centro)
  • West Yorkshire (Metro)

The Shire Areas

This definition covers all parts of England outside London and the PTE areas (see above).
